8/10oz. Oiled & Waxed Harness Leather — Black — Single Back by Wickett & Craig
A premium oiled and waxed harness leather from Wickett & Craig, hot-stuffed with a rich blend of natural oils and waxes for exceptional strength, water resistance, and a beautiful pull-up effect. Available in a deep, rich Black color.
🕯️ About Wax Bloom — A Natural Characteristic, Not a Defect
Due to the intensive hot-stuffing process, this leather is saturated with a generous blend of natural oils and waxes. As a result, you may notice a whitish, hazy, or cloudy film on the surface of the leather upon arrival — this is known as wax bloom (also called "fat spew" or "spew").
Wax bloom occurs when excess waxes migrate to the surface of the leather, particularly after exposure to cold temperatures or during storage. This is a completely natural phenomenon and is widely recognized in the leather industry as a sign of a well-oiled, richly conditioned hide.
How to remove wax bloom: Simply buff the surface gently with a soft cloth or your hand. The warmth of your touch will cause the wax to re-absorb into the leather, restoring its deep, rich color and natural sheen. Alternatively, a light application of leather conditioner or a brief exposure to gentle warmth will clear the bloom entirely.
Wax bloom is not a manufacturing defect and does not affect the quality, durability, or performance of the leather in any way.
Product Overview
Oiled & Waxed Harness Leather by Wickett & Craig is produced using a traditional hot-stuffing method, where the leather is immersed in a heated blend of natural tallow, neatsfoot oil, and waxes. This process drives the conditioning agents deep into the fiber structure, resulting in leather that is exceptionally supple, water-resistant, and long-lasting.
Unlike surface-finished leathers, this harness leather develops a distinctive pull-up effect — when scratched or bent, the leather lightens in color, revealing the rich oils within. Over time and with use, it develops a stunning, deep patina unique to each piece.
The deep Black color is drum-dyed through the full thickness of the hide, ensuring consistent color even as the leather wears and ages.
